Writers’ Residency: Collaboration @BikeShedTheatre

FUSE

A week-long residency for writers @ Bike Shed Theatre

Monday 14th – Friday 18th October 10.30am – 6.00pm

Following the success of Memorabilia earlier in 2013 and building on its desire to develop new theatre through company residencies and collaborations, this autumn the Bike Shed hosts its second week-long course for writers interested in pushing forward their practice.

Fuse is an exploration of where our writing craft might meet other people, spaces and artistic disciplines: what happens when we attempt to fuse our writing with one another, across art-forms and with performers and non-theatre spaces?

Led by playwright and dramaturg David Lane, ten writers will spend the week responding to provocations, questions, exercises and discussion to push their understanding of writing into new and challenging areas asking:

  • What’s the difference between a play and a performance text?
  • How do you write the language of an image?
  • Where do you start when writing for non-theatre spaces?
  • What happens when our desire for an event meets a story?
  • How does a writer’s skill and craft impact upon devising?
What can performers bring to you at the beginning of a process?
Including guest speakers, one-to-one support, a full day with actors in the theatre space and tickets to a live performance, this course will give writers space to think, play and expand their toolbox whatever their style of writing.

The week will finish with an informal sharing of work generated through the duration of the course.

Places are £225.00 each – available by application – and the course is limited to ten writers. Food is not included but all places include a week-long 20% discount on food and 50% on hot drinks from the Bike Shed Bar.

To apply for a place please contact writers@bikeshedtheatre.co.uk with:

  • Full name and contact details
  • Evidence of previous experience in writing for performance (CV or biog)
  • Statement outlining your interest in the course content (up to 500 words)

The Bike Shed will also be awarding two bursaries for the course, on the basis of application strength. Please indicate within your application if you wish to be considered for a bursary. Deadline for applications: 30th September

Comments from Memorabilia participants:

‘I was seriously challenged having never studied this subject before, but I now feel more confident as a writer. The course enabled me to discover the intention and direction of the play that I’m currently writing. It has made me more ambitious and willing to take risks creatively.’

‘A really well rounded course with elements of both writing and also tips on looking to get that work produced. Having the guest speakers was also a nice way to see a stepping stone between where I am now and where I want to be in the industry.’

‘David was incredibly insightful in the one-to-one sessions and seemed to understand just what was needed in order for the work to progress.’

  1. I’d love to come but that week is already too busy in the diary. Another time, maybe?

  2. Hi Anne, I’ll post any future Devon based workshops that David does up here. They are highly recommended!
